Zak Crawley Unaware of Stokes' Controversial 'Frail Characters' Remarks

The English opening batter Zak Crawley suggested he had no knowledge of statements made by skipper Stokes about the team environment as no place for "those lacking fortitude".

Stokes made this message in several interviews in the wake of England's defeat in the second match of the Ashes against Australia earlier this month.

In the lead-up to the Adelaide Test, where the visitors now face a series loss with a match to spare, Stokes noted he had allowed his sentiment to "drift around" among the squad.

"I've done the necessary discussions in recent days that I required," said the England leader.

But, following Crawley made 85 on the penultimate day in the third Test, he commented: "I didn't see that."

"I wasn't actively searching for it. Our approach is to take everything that is said in the media with some skepticism," Crawley continued.

Frank Discussions and Consistent Messaging

Stokes made the "weak men" observation after his side suffered a loss in Brisbane to fall 2-0 down.

The team afterwards took a holiday to a Queensland resort in the gap between the second and third matches.

Prior to the Adelaide contest, he revealed his players had held "raw" conversations and he had asked them to "display some fight" in their battle to remain alive in the series.

Nevertheless, Crawley stated the messaging from the captain and coach McCullum had stayed in line with their prior tenure in charge.

"The atmosphere has been extremely upbeat, unchanged," noted Crawley. "The focus is on maintaining positivity, playing our brand, with lots of freedom. We believed we were capable of something special entering this Test."

Australia Close of Historic Ashes Triumph

The opener's dismissal on day four was part of a decisive three-wicket burst by Australian off-spinner Lyon.

The spinner's triple strike in a short spell – he also bowled Brook and Ben Stokes – left the chasing side six down for 207 chasing a daunting target of 435.

Consequently, the home team need just four more wickets on the final day to secure an unassailable three-nil lead after three matches played.

Defeat will extend England's winless run in Australia to 18 Tests and condemn them to a fourth successive overseas Ashes defeat.

This series will be completed in just eleven days of cricket – after England losing the initial matches in two and four days respectively.

Not since 1921, when Australia completed a series win in the UK in eight days, has the destination of the urn been determined more swiftly. Australia have also won in eleven days on two other instances in the modern era.

"This is disappointing," admitted Crawley. "Our goal was to regain the Ashes and we're facing elimination now."

"There will still be plenty to play for and we'll definitely view it with that mindset," Crawley added.

"It's been tough. They're a very, very good team. It was always going to be hard coming here against them. They were the favourites and they've proven why."

Ollie Pope's Position Under Scrutiny

While the opener's performance in Adelaide likely secures doubts about his immediate future in the side, Ollie Pope appears under immense pressure for his position in the Melbourne Test on Boxing Day.

The Surrey batsman was out for 17 in the team's second knock on day four, extending his poor record against the old enemy.

Across sixteen Ashes knocks, Pope has never made a half-century and averages 17.62.

Only one other England player since 1900 – Amiss – has featured as many times in the top order in Ashes Tests and returned a lower average.

However, Crawley said any notion his teammate is being scrutinised originates with "the media" – meaning the journalists – "not inside the camp."

"The squad is fully aware how good of a player he is," said he. "He has had a good year if I'm honest."

"He has produced several excellent innings. It is talk from the outside. There's no chat of that nature regarding Pope in the camp," he finished.
