They're Doing to America What They Did within Christianity

Trumpism's most telling and distinctive moments – not its most significant, nor most harsh, nor most threatening, nor stupidest, but possibly its most revealing – came earlier this autumn. During the period of a few weeks, the nation's leader began displaying the public his designs for a lavish reception room twice the size of the White House and subsequently started solo dismantling the East Wing to construct it.

He has done things countless times more severe – the existing assessment of deaths resulting from his reductions to USAID amounts to 600,000 and increasing, and this week a study predicted his petroleum strategies would result in fatalities an additional 1.3 million. But nothing as definitional. No previous president would have attempted – truly, no previous leader would have imagined – solo demolishing major areas of the executive mansion in order to erect a palace-inspired entertainment space, with the active collaboration of some of America's wealthiest, nearly all of which have business with federal agencies.

We moved from 'the gentle will obtain the Earth' into 'the gentle will succumb to cholera'

As disorienting as it is to witness the president attempt to overturn the traditional concept about democracy and replace it with its complete opposite, there exists a significant segment of Americans who might not perceive it entirely new. This includes individuals like us – within elder demographics almost a majority – who were educated as mainline Protestant Christians.

We have observed across decades while conservative evangelical congregations converted the Savior we grew up with into exactly the opposite of our understanding of him. Essentially, they turned a figure of affection into an icon of animosity who approves precisely the cruelties that he denounced in scripture; this change developed more gradually, through multiple decades rather than months, yet it remains disconcerting in the same ways, a disorienting gut punch for countless people.

A Damaging Christianity Establishes Itself

Hence I shall explain the Savior that I grew up with, since in theory Jesus is the center of Christian religion, and because the rapidly expanding group among Americans might have little sense about him because they identify as skeptics or agnostics or nones. I raise no objection with these various perspectives, nor with alternative spiritual paths; however I believe that contain precious wisdom of significant worth in biblical accounts.

It is emphatically absolutely not the story of a powerful ruler appearing; rather, a child comes into the world to homeless parents in a garage, who are forced to hastily depart to a foreign land to evade secret police. The child matures in simple surroundings, a working carpenter; his doctrine is about love for others, specifically for the impoverished – not simply tender feelings, but tangible care, expressed by feeding and housing. Jesus' answer to violence is to offer the other cheek – not as a demonstration of passive acceptance, but as a method to instruct the attacker; his method regarding offenses indicates that whenever someone steals your jacket you must offer the person your additional clothing too.

The evident and clear truth that the Jesus from scripture requests a type of radical love centered on the needy is what has always made Christian religion somewhat of a scandalous religion: engaging for the masses, but due to its intrinsic extremism needing to be controlled. In the 1950s it was restrained through watering down – Protestantism was so widespread that it practically baptized the status quo.

A Struggle for the Finest of Us

So I have been encouraged to witness the persistent defiance against Trump emerge in this past year. It has provided significant comfort to participate in developing the initiative that has taken to the streets through repeated demonstrations, and seems to have inspired electorate to show up in significant amounts in the off-year elections. We must have to persist with it, and with identical determination, with American flags throughout each rally and requests to the highest qualities within national heritage.

We will be questioned ... regarding how you welcomed the stranger? Did you welcome them and welcome him or reject?

America is best defended, to put it differently, by reference to the best within national tradition, similar to Christianity is most protected by relationship to that which renders it unique and wonderful, specifically the model of Christ. In neither case does it mean feigning the most negative regarding America and religious tradition did not happen; it signifies both humility and faith, a mixture that serious US believers ought to accept.
