Puzzling Rosy Slime on Remote Tasmanian Shoreline Raises Concerns of Likely Phytoplankton Proliferation

Officials in the island state are attempting to pinpoint a pink slime that has appeared on a remote shoreline, with some scientists anxious it could be an phytoplankton proliferation.

Widespread Presence On Shore

The rosy-colored ooze materialized across a portion of a southern bay about 60km south of the city. A comparable ooze has also been noted on areas of Little Roaring Beach and Little Taylors Bay.

Samples Taken for Examination

Samples have been taken and provided to the Environment Protection Authority for examination. A representative stated that "phytoplankton proliferations are a natural event in reaction to changes in minerals, warmth, precipitation or light".

"These blooms are at times called crimson or rosy tides because the proliferations can change the water red," the representative added. "Only some phytoplankton events are harmful, with several kinds functioning as a primary source of food for animals in the marine food web."
