EU Could Respond to ‘Unjustified’ US Travel Restrictions, Spokesperson Says

The European Union might “respond swiftly and decisively” in response to what it deems “unwarranted” travel bans imposed by the US on five European individuals involved in combating digital hatred and disinformation, an EU official stated.

EU Officials Condemn US Move as ‘Intimidation’

European leaders including the French president accused the US administration of “coercion and intimidation”, after the travel bans targeted figures who have been central to efforts to enact legislation governing American tech companies.

“For far too long, ideologues in Europe have spearheaded organised efforts to coerce American platforms to suppress US perspectives they oppose,” stated a senior US official online. “The current administration will no longer tolerate these egregious acts of censorship beyond its borders.”

Broad Criticism From EU Nations

Nations including Germany, Spain, and the UK, alongside numerous EU representatives supported the French president in condemning the decision.

The bans were imposed on Tuesday against a former EU commissioner involved in crafting the bloc’s digital governance law, as well as four activists fighting false information, from two in Germany and two in the UK.

A Deepening Dispute Regarding Governance

The DSA is viewed by Washington as a form of censorship, whereas EU authorities contend the regulations are essential to combat hate speech and falsehoods.

This row threatens to become a facet of a much broader existing political and ideological clash between the current US administration and European institutions.

Furthermore, a congressional representative has filed a lawsuit to demand the removal of the current president’s name from a prominent performing arts center in the capital.
