The National Football League has imposed a substantial $250,000 penalty on Dallas Cowboys proprietor Jones for what he claims was an “unintentional” offensive hand signal made toward attendees during a recent game at MetLife Stadium.
Viral video clips seemed to capture Jones making an obscene gesture at Jets fans, but Jones insists he was actually giving a thumbs-up to Cowboys fans in attendance as his team clinched a decisive win.
“That was regrettable. That was kind of an interaction with Cowboys supporters out in front of us,” Jones explained during a radio appearance. “Present was a large group of Dallas supporters—not New York fans, our fans. The whole venue was filled with excitement for the Dallas team.”
He further clarified that the signal was completely accidental, happening amid the excitement following the team’s final touchdown. “I simply put up the wrong finger,” he noted. “The action was accidentally done. This is sincere. If you want to call it unplanned, you can. But it got resolved rapidly.”
League Context for Proprietor Fines
This is not the first time an league proprietor has been penalized for misconduct. Previous cases include:
- Carolina Panthers owner David Tepper was fined $300,000 for throwing a drink at fans in early 2024.
- Former Titans owner Bud Adams received a $250,000 penalty in 2009 for a comparable offensive signal.
Jones, who is known for his media savvy, reportedly has an estimated net worth of around $16bn, so the penalty easily payable for the wealthy proprietor.
