An Compassion of Unknown Individuals: The Way a Gentleman I Barely Knew Assisted Me Land the Role That Changed My Life

During the late 1980s, I set out on a backpacking trip to the European continent with a travel partner. Since my companion was exploring enrolling in graduate studies in NYC, we had arranged a fortnight visit there en route to London.

We reached the student accommodation, a big multi-story edifice on the UWS known as International House. Once we unpacked, we made our way to the dining hall, where we got some food, sat down, and engaged in conversation with other diners.

Beside me was an individual of Iraqi origin studying engineering at a prestigious New York university. He wanted to know what I did, and I shared that I had just graduated with a degree in science and had been conducting research involving microscopic analysis.

He mentioned that there was an research lab at the university – adjacent to the school of engineering, which was why he was aware of it. He suggested that I should apply for a position with them. I dismissed the idea, saying that I was soon departing to Europe and, additionally, I lacked a US visa.

The next day I toured the city, coming back to the dining hall that evening. The man from Iraq approached me and informed me that he had set up a meeting for me with the director of the microscopy lab at Columbia. Because he had gone to the trouble, I went to the meeting – but immediately informed my host that I was without a work permit, so I was unable to accept the role.

Reflecting the city's spirit – a metropolis where everything seems achievable – she responded: “We can make that happen. What's your start date?” I didn't board the aircraft to London.

I worked there for a trio of years. A perk of the job was that I got complimentary education at Columbia, and I used the opportunity to complete a graduate degree in global studies.

We didn't cross paths after that and I can't recall his full name, but his remarkable generosity altered my destiny in numerous aspects. I would never have had the bravery or self-belief to contact anyone at an prestigious college and request employment. Additionally, I had long dreamed to study abroad, but wouldn't have been able to pay for it without that free tuition.

Critically, that job in New York led me to a job in Zurich where I encountered my beautiful French husband, with whom I now have a family of four kids. That encounter altered everything. That helpful person set me on a different course in life, and I’m always appreciative.
